The 3-to-2 nap transition: signs, timing and a gentle 7-day plan
When babies drop from three naps to two, the signs it’s time, and a day-by-day plan to make the switch without a week of overtired evenings.
Somewhere between 6 and 9 months, the third nap starts to feel like a battle. Your baby takes ages to fall asleep for it — or naps fine and then won’t go down at bedtime. That’s usually the 3-to-2 nap transition knocking.
Signs your baby is ready
Look for a pattern over a week or more, not a single bad day:
- the third nap is consistently refused or takes 20+ minutes to start
- bedtime keeps slipping later because of that last nap
- naps are getting shorter across the board
- early wake-ups have crept in
- wake windows comfortably stretch past about 2½ hours
Illness, teething, travel and developmental leaps can all scramble naps for a few days. If things settle once that passes, your baby may not be ready yet.
A gentle 7-day plan
Days 1–2: bridge days
Keep three naps, but cap the last one at 30–40 minutes so it doesn’t push bedtime late. This takes the pressure off while your baby’s wake windows stretch.
Days 3–5: two naps and an earlier bedtime
Move to two naps with longer wake windows — typically around 3 to 3½ hours before each sleep. Bring bedtime up to about an hour earlier than usual for these days. An early bedtime is the safety net: it prevents the end-of-day overtiredness that makes transitions miserable.
Days 6–7: settle in
Ease bedtime back toward its usual time as your baby copes. Some days will still be hard — that’s normal. A hard day doesn’t mean the plan has failed; repeat it and keep going.
On a rough afternoon, a 15-minute catnap in the car or stroller is a perfectly good bridge. Just keep it short.
What a 2-nap day can look like
For a baby waking at 7:00 am, a typical 2-nap day might be:
| Time | |
|---|---|
| Wake | 7:00 am |
| Nap 1 | 10:00 – 11:15 am |
| Nap 2 | 2:30 – 3:45 pm |
| Bedtime | about 7:15 pm |
Your baby’s times will differ — this is a shape, not a timetable.
How long does it take?
Most babies settle into two naps within one to two weeks. Expect a few wobbly days in the middle; consistency matters more than any single day.
